Neighborhood Street Repaving Planned

The City of Midland will begin repaving select neighborhood streets February 4.

The areas to be covered include streets north of Cuthbert Avenue and south of Princeton Avenue between Garfield Street and B Street, south of Loop 250 between Wadley Ave and Midland Drive, and north of Sherwood Drive between Holiday Hill Road and Driftwood Drive. These areas were selected based upon their pavement condition, and are part of a six-year maintenance program.

“Pavement in these neighborhoods dates from the early 1980s all the way to the 1960s,” shared Gabe McClelland, Transportation Manager. “They have served their useful life-spans and then some,” he added.

The City’s six-year maintenance program is a plan to address poor condition roads throughout the City. It replaces a ten-year maintenance cycle and will allow pavement to be improved and maintained more frequently. The expected life-span for the roads once they are re-paved is 20 to 30 years.

To access neighborhood streets with paving equipment, the City cautions that a 14-foot overhead clearance must be present. Trees with limbs under this clearance, which hang into the right-of-way or roadway may require trimming. A certified arborist has been hired to conduct the tree-trimming and residents who could be affected should be on the look-out for communication from the arborist Arbor Masters Tree Service. “Our intention is to minimize to the greatest extent possible impacts to trees,” said McClelland.

Each street is expected to take approximately one week to pave. The entire project is expected to last  two months. Anyone with questions or concerns is invited to call the Transportation Department at (432) 685-7293.
