CITY OF MIDLAND BUCKS TREND WITH INCREASED SALES TAX COLLECTION

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland bucked a region-wide trend for cities with a positive sales tax report in April.
The City of Midland reported $5,014,894 in sales tax revenue – an increase of 2.19% compared to April 2024. That increase moved the year-to-date balance to $39,207,842, a 1.59% increase over this point last year.
April’s collection also was 7.8% higher than the monthly budget. The City year-to-date actuals are $2,035,278 more than budget.
Midland County also experienced a slight increase of 2.35% in April. However, the following cities reported decreases compared to April 2024 -- Odessa (-3.97%), Lubbock (-10.42%), Amarillo (-2.99%) and San Angelo (-3.42%).
Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; April’s collection is based on February sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City of Midland.
Analysis
April 2025 Sales Tax revenue increased partially because of an audit adjustment of approximately -$100,000 in 2024, where as 2025 saw a positive audit adjustment of $49,000 in the city's favor.
Comparing March 2025 to March 2024, most industries, including Retail and Oil, showed an increase in sales tax contribution. Construction and Waste Management stayed relatively flat.
