(Aug. 4, 2025)
MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland has released the 2025 Vision Zero Annual Implementation Progress Report.
This report provides updated crash data and highlights the actions taken by the City over the past year to advance our shared goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2050.
In June of 2024, the City Council approved Midland's Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP) as well as adopted the Vision Zero Policy aiming to eliminate deaths and serious injury's on Midland roadways by 2050. The approved CSAP offered several solutions to help Midland reach that goal, and now, after one year of implementation of best practices, the results speak for themselves. Midland Police Department and Engineering and Traffic teams at the City of Midland have implemented programs and infrastructure improvements that have contributed to the success of the program. Overall, the City has seen a 19% reduction in accidents causing death or severe injuries.
“Vision Zero is a critical program for the City of Midland to ensure we are focused on providing the safest community possible,” District 1 Councilman Briann Stubbs said. “With the growth in traffic on all of our roads, staying diligent on road safety has been a priority for the city. This recent data shows our staff’s work on road safety is making a sizable impact on our community.”
Gabe McClelland, director of Engineering for the City of Midland, added, "Our engineering and traffic teams have prioritized road safety in our operations and the Vision Zero CSAP has empowered us to conduct infrastructure enhancements at a larger scale. This includes the installation of retroreflective backplates at signalized intersections, radar feedback signs, enhanced crosswalks and school zones, and the strategic installation of roundabouts, medians, and other traffic calming devices. Improved detection equipment and data collection at major roadways has led to signal timing improvements. More importantly, the Vision Zero CSAP has guided our Engineering Department during planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of our City’s street network and is often referenced while making Transportation-related decisions."
We invite residents, stakeholders, and community partners to review the progress we've made together as we continue to build a safer transportation system for everyone.
