City of Midland continues strong sales tax collection run

CITY STARTS NEW FISCAL YEAR WITH STRONG SALES TAX REPORT

(Oct. 8, 2025)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland’s sales tax collection in October was more than 7% higher than October 2024, continuing a strong run from a record-breaking fiscal year 2025.

October is the first month of fiscal year 2026, and the City started strong with a month that was not only greater than the past two Octobers (2023 and 2024) but FY 2026 started $512,821 over budget. 

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; The October collection is based on August sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City.

Analysis

  • Comparing September 2025 to September 2024, there was a surprisingly large jump in engineering services (amount of $862,911), while the remainder of Professional Services stayed relatively flat
  • Oil extraction itself has declined, but most other Manufacturing-related businesses appear flat
  • Wholesale had a large increase from September 2024 to September 2025. Looking across FY2025, September 2025 is level with revenue in other months, while September 2024 was an exceptionally low month for FY2024.
