CITY OF MIDLAND DEPARTMENTS READIES FOR WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS
(Jan. 22, 2026)
MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland is working hard to prepare for extreme conditions this weekend.
The most important thing is that residents stay home and off potentially treacherous streets and limit their exposure to temperatures that could fall to near 10 degrees on Saturday and Sunday nights and into the teens on Friday and Monday nights.
Here is how the City of Midland is preparing for the conditions.
Utilities Department
The Utilities Department has taken proactive steps to prepare City infrastructure for cold weather conditions and to reduce the risk of service disruptions to residents and businesses. Utility crews have focused on winterizing critical water and wastewater systems, including insulating exposed piping, valves, instrumentation and other vulnerable components at key facilities and locations throughout the distribution and collection systems. Staff have also reviewed and reinforced operational procedures to ensure rapid response capability during freezing conditions.
In addition, Utilities personnel have coordinated with contractors and support vendors in advance to ensure quick access to emergency repair resources if breaks or equipment failures occur during periods of sustained cold temperatures. As part of continuity and resilience planning, the department has verified generator readiness and fuel availability and has secured additional temporary power capacity by renting generators for the Water Purification Plant and other critical pumps to maintain operations if commercial power interruptions occur.
Transportation Department
Beginning Friday, the Engineering Department (Transportation Division) will begin a 24-hour shift and work around the clock through the weekend. The City plans to treat roadways for ice, remove tree branches from roadways and help address any other issues that pop up.
Midland Fire Department
Midland Fire has implemented internal preparedness measures in response to the anticipated severe winter weather to ensure continuity of operations. Midland County Emergency Management has activated a virtual Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to support information sharing and situational awareness as needed. MFD will continue to closely monitor National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts for any escalation in severity and proactively adjust operational planning to address potential needs through the weekend.
