CITY OF MIDLAND: VOTERS WILL DECIDE CORRALES’ REPLACEMENT

(February 1, 2024)

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The following are things to know about the City of Midland’s efforts to fill the vacant seat on the Midland City Council.

  1. The person who will fill the at-large seat will be selected by the voters. There is no appointment process.
  2. Having a council vacancy is not unprecedented. It has taken place on multiple occasions over the past couple of decades.
  3. The City Attorney’s Office is looking into local and state guidelines to make sure the City of Midland’s next steps take place in accordance with the state constitution and the city charter.

The City of Midland wants to have its “i’s” dotted and “t’s” crossed as we fill the open seat on the council. One thing we can say for sure is there is no scenario where the people won’t vote for the person to fill the open seat on the council.

It is best for the city of Midland to provide all the information at one time to prevent unneeded speculation about what’s next following Councilman Corrales’ tragic death. We expect to address the matter next following the February 13 meeting of the Midland City Council.
