UPDATE: MIDLAND POLICE DETAINS DRIVER AFTER HIT-AND-RUN KILLS JUVENILE

Update: The juvenile hit Thursday afternoon in southeast Midland has passed away. Next of kin has been notified. 

Midland Police Department continues with its investigation.

On Thursday, February 8, 2024, at approximately 4:35 pm, officers with the Midland Police Department detained a driver after he struck a juvenile with a truck during a hit-and-run, leaving the juvenile in critical condition. 

Upon arrival, officers revealed a black truck struck the juvenile who was attempting to cross the road after leaving school in the 1900 block of South Lamesa Road. An officer located and detained the driver, 41-year-old Rogelio Ortiz. 

The juvenile was air-lifted to Lubbock in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
