MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The City of Midland is pleased to report that the mass fostering effort at the end of April at the Midland Animal Shelter resulted in nearly 130 dogs surviving distemper and being declared symptom-free.
The organization Fix West Texas reported its final results from the fostering effort after a distemper outbreak this spring.
“All of the 129 dogs who survived distemper are now fully cleared and symptom-free,” Fix West Texas reported.
The organization worked with the City of Midland, Midland Animal Services and other animal support groups -- like Sassys Dog Rescue and Midland Animal Shelter Adoptables -- on a mass foster effort to avoid the euthanasia of around 150 dogs, including the 129 that survived and have been declared symptom-free.
Fix West Texas in its report stated there was no spread of distemper within the community and within its foster homes during this time.
“93 percent of the dogs rescued were able to survive this terrible disease because they were vaccinated by our City on intake,” the report stated.
