DRIVING TO/FROM COSTCO -- HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
(July 11, 2025)
Plenty of Options to get to and from Costco
We encourage people to be aware that Costco will be extremely busy, and traffic to and from (especially along State Highway 191 and on SH 158) will be heavier than normal.
Remember, using access points from State Highway 191 and north of Costco on SH 158 are the best ways to travel to and from Costco.
A “No Through Traffic” sign has been installed proactively at Sinclair Avenue, east of SH 158, to preserve neighborhood integrity and limit non-local, cut-through traffic. MPD will beef up patrol in this area, on the day of opening and for the first few weeks after.
Costco’s regular opening hours are at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. for Executive Members) so it won’t conflict with school and rush hour traffic as much as a regular grocery store.
Signals and other improvements
The City of Midland, in collaboration with partners, is proactively planning and implementing improvements along the SH 158/SH191 corridor. These efforts aim to enhance long-term mobility, increase intersection safety, and ensure infrastructure keeps pace with area growth and development.
- Wadley Avenue Connection at SH 158
- Wadley Avenue will open to traffic at SH 158 upon completion of storm drain infrastructure as part of The Preserve development.
- SH 158 will be restriped to include a dedicated left-turn lane into Wadley, improving traffic operations and turning movement safety.
- Strategic TxDOT-Led Intersection Enhancements
- Intersection upgrades are scheduled for:
- SH 158 & Wadley SH 158 & Briarwood
- Bid letting: October 2025
- Construction start target: Q1 2026
- SH 158/Avalon & SH 191 Improvements
- The City is coordinating with TxDOT to add a dual-left turn lane for southbound SH 158/Avalon motorists turning onto SH 191, supporting smoother high-volume turning movements and reducing delay.
- Signal Timing Optimization
- We are actively exploring signal progression improvements along the SH 158/Avalon corridor to improve travel time consistency and reduce congestion during peak periods.
Speed limit changes
Speed Limit Reductions along SH 158 include:
- County Road 60 to Wadley (from 60 mph to 55 mph)
- Wadley to Ironwood Drive (from 60 to 45 mph), Ironwood Drive to 191 (from 55 mph to 45)
Speed Limit Reductions along 191 include:
- Loop 250 to SH 158/Avalon (from 70 mph to 45 mph)
Other rules of the road:
- Patience: we predict the area is going to be crazy busy during the first few months. Infrastructure improvements are coming quickly to this area, but Costco also opened extremely quickly.
- Be Aware: These areas and improvements will be new for a lot of people. Pay Attention to what other vehicles are doing.
- Be a Proper Parker: Pay attention to where you are parking your vehicle. If the parking lot is full, please don’t block entrances and exits by parking on Sinclair, Kirkland, along State Highways 158 and 191, and inside adjacent neighborhoods.
