Yearly growth of employed Midlanders still tops in West Texas

MIDLAND MSA RISES TO THIRD IN TEXAS FOR PERCENTAGE GROWTH OF EMPLOYED PEOPLE

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The number of employed people in the Midland metropolitan statistical area increased by 2.8% in July (compared to July 2024), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

That increase was the third-largest percentage gain in Texas. College Station-Bryan (4.9%), Eagle Pass (3.3%), Midland (2.8%) and Abilene (2.7%) made up the top four. The state average was 1.7%, according to the BLS.

Across the region, Midland led in July. Following Midland and Abilene were San Angelo (2.6%), Amarillo (2.0%) Lubbock (1.6%) and Odessa (1.0%).

The number of employed people in Midland increased from 123,500 in July 2024 to 126,900 in July 2025.

The Texas Workforce Commission previously reported Midland posted the lowest unemployment rate in the state during the month of July (3.1%).
