Midland makes 'best cities' list for affordable retirement

MIDLAND MAKES LIST FOR 'BEST U.S. CITIES TO RETIRE AFFORDABLY'

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- Midland was ranked among the top “25 Best U.S. Cities To Retire Affordably,” according to an article published recently on Forbes.com.

Forbes referenced a study from the financial information website -- gobankingrates.com – which ranked Midland 22nd. Midland was one of five Texas cities on the list, according to Forbes. The others were El Paso (No. 9), Dallas (10), San Antonio (14) and Corpus Christi (15).

“Midland has a slower pace of life but a growing arts scene and cheap,” according to the GoBankingRates study. “The cost of living in Midland is 7.8% below average, with housing coming in at about 10% under.”

The study reported, “To find the best locations where homeowners could retire for around $2,000 or less, GOBankingRates looked at several sources to analyze factors such as population data, age demographics and cost of living. Here are the top 25 cities where retirees can soak up the sunshine without stretching savings too thin.”

The study gave Midland a Livability score of 78, showed 10.5% of the population is 65+, reported a monthly cost of living with Social Security for homeowner of $1,389 and a monthly cost of living with Social Security for renter ($1,124).

The top five communities were Tallahassee, Florida; Fort Myers, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; Pensacola, Florida; and Greenville, South Carolina.
