City of Midland reports new yearly sales tax collection record

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- A banner sales tax collection during the month of September allowed the City of Midland to collect a record amount for a fiscal year in 2025.

The Texas Comptroller reported a sales tax collection of nearly $6 million in September, which was a 15.26 percent increase over September 2024 and drove the annual collection to $68.927 million during fiscal year 2025. 

The previous record for a year was set in FY 2023 ($68.369 million). Last year, city officials reported a collection of $67.098 million. Four of the five largest collections in Midland’s history came in 2022-25. The other year was FY 2019. 

City officials also reported the actual fiscal year total was $3.927 million over what was budgeted. The fiscal year begins in October and ends in September.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; September’s collection is based on July sales. The City of Midland collects a full cent of the 8.25% of sales tax inside the City of Midland.
