TEXAS ANTI-GANG CENTER - PERMIAN BASIN HELPS BRING SHOOTING SUSPECT TO CUSTODY

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas -- Members of the Texas Anti-Gang Center – Permian Basin helped bring shooting suspect into custody earlier this week.

The TAG Center- Permian Basin is made up of personnel assigned from the Midland Police Department, Midland County Sheriff’s Office, Ector County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Midland Couty District Attorney’s Office, FBI, Homeland Security and DEA/HIDTA.

The center, funded through a Texas Anti-Gang grant provided by the Office of the Governor, seeks to bring federal, state and local agencies together to target gang activity, drug trafficking and violence in the region.

The Midland County Sheriff’s Office oversees the grant and hosts the facilities for the new center. Reports have stated this marks the 10th TAG Center in Texas, joining established locations in Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, Lubbock, Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, Tyler and Waco.

On Nov. 11, Lubbock Police and TAG Center – Lubbock were investigating a shooting that occurred earlier in the day. Jeffery Porter, 38, was identified as the suspect in the shooting and was last seen traveling south of Lubbock on US Highway 87. Information was passed to the TAG Center – Permian Basin and its members intercepted Porter north of Midland with the assistance of Department of Public Safety aircraft.

A traffic stop was initiated, and Porter was taken into custody without incident and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
