Early voting ends in the special city council election

CITY ELECTION: EARLY VOTING ENDS 

(May 1, 2024) 

Heading into Election Day on Saturday, May 4, 2024, 3.8% of the 75,472 voters inside the City of Midland have cast a ballot in the special election for the empty at-large Midland City Council seat.

Early voting ended on Tuesday with 2,936 ballots received in person and by mail. That includes 665 on Tuesday – the highest of the seven days of early voting.

The candidate field includes Cheston Blank, John Burkholder, Eric Davidson, James R. “Bull” Henry and Ben Roberts. An at-large seat requires a candidate runs city-wide.

The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of the at-large term, which ends in January 2025. Should that person seek to serve as an-large council representative for another term, he would be required to run for office again in November.

The last special election for an at-large council member happened in 2008. That year, Jerry Morales won a special election for an at-large city council seat. Voter turnout in that election was 6.79%.

Note: A “Vote Center” is a polling place where any registered voter in the city of Midland may vote on Election Day, as long as the voter lives in the city.
