Astronaut Gregory H. "Box" Johnson

A former NASA astronaut, Air Force fighter and test pilot, aerospace engineer, and STEM advocate. He served as pilot on two space shuttle missions—STS-123, delivering critical components to the ISS, and STS-134, the final flight of Endeavour, carrying the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. With over 5,000 flight hours in 50+ aircraft, Johnson’s military service included combat missions in Operations Desert Storm and Southern Watch. At NASA, he held leadership roles in astronaut safety, shuttle upgrades, and ISS operations. From 2013–2018, he led the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), managing half of the U.S. resources aboard the ISS National Lab. He now works as an aerospace consultant and continues to champion STEM education.

Run the Runway Update:

The Run the Runway race, facilitated by Midland Athletic Company, is still on for this year’s Fly Into Fall event! However, please note that the race route will be different from previous years due to active reconstruction on the runway.

This year’s course will take participants along the taxiways and other areas of the airpark. We appreciate your understanding as we work around these improvements and look forward to welcoming runners back on the runway in 2026!
