The City of Midland has dozens of traffic signals that include a flashing yellow arrow left turn display, which has been shown to be safer and more understandable for drivers as well as more flexible for improved signal operations. By adding flashing yellow arrow left turn displays, City traffic engineers can vary operation of the signal depending on the time of day and allow more permitted turns.
Many City-maintained traffic signals utilize video detection cameras to automatically sense the presence of waiting vehicles. These detection cameras are used only for operating the traffic signal; they are not used for traffic enforcement.
