MPD: OFFICERS RESPOND TO SHOOTING OUTSIDE WEST SIDE SMOKE SHOP

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- Around 3:35 p.m. Friday (Nov. 8, 2024), Midland Police responded to a shooting outside Mr. Puff’s Smoke Shop in the 4300 block of Andrews Highway.
MPD reported that witnesses on scene described how a male was inside the store asking about items to purchase costing approximately $130.
“The items were placed on the counter near the cash register,” MPD reported. “The male then grabbed the items without paying and went towards the front door of the store.”
A store employee, 27-year-old Joshua Miller, walked from behind the counter toward the front door following the male, MPD reported.
“The store employee fired one shot striking the male in the back, causing the male to fall to the ground outside of the store,” MPD stated. “There were no reports of the victim making any threats or producing any type of weapon during this incident. The victim was subsequently identified as Deandre Jefferson.”
MPD added that the store employee placed the gun on the ground and was taken into custody by responding officers. An incident resume described the incident as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The victim was transported by Midland Fire personnel to Midland Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.
