The City of Midland's Solid Waste Department will hold a ceremony Thursday afternoon to announce the opening of its newest landfill cell.
City staff, elected officials and friends of the Solid Waste Department will hold a "ribbon trashing" near the newly-constructed Cell 7 at the City of Midland Landfill (7904 Garden City Highway) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Experts will be available to discuss the process of creating a new landfill cell as well as how a landfill cell functions.
The process of creating the new cell included excavation and fill, followed by the installation of necessary infrastructure to keep contaminants out of groundwater. Cell 7, which spans across 24 acres, will last between 7-10 years and is the fifth out of 12 cells to be built at the current landfill.
The City of Midland Landfill is located approximately 9 miles southeast of downtown Midland at the intersection of Garden City Highway and South County Road 1110. Those planning on attending the ceremony are asked to enter at the City of Midland Landfill sign (located on the left when traveling southeast on Garden City Highway) and travel past the scale house toward a large hill until able to take a right turn onto the paved road. The paved road will continue until attendees arrive at the designated parking area. Assistance is available at the landfill scale house as needed.###
