City of Midland Parks and Recreation Division employees will be working alongside Southwest Airlines volunteers on Wednesday, September 24th from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. as they paint the building at the Washington Aquatics Center, located at 1601 E. Indiana. This effort is a part of Southwest Airlines - “Heart of the Community” program to revitalize and activate public spaces in the hearts of American cities in partnership with the pioneering nonprofit organization behind Placemaking, Project for Public Spaces (PPS).
In August, the Parks and Recreation Division was contacted by Southwest Airlines and asked if there was a project that they could include in this outreach effort. Examples of typical projects for the outreach included painting, cleaning, planting, etc. The building at Washington Aquatics Center is in need of fresh paint, so an application was submitted for this project to be considered as one of the 2014 Southwest Airlines - “Heart of the Community” projects. The division was notified in early September that this project had been selected for the local Southwest Airlines employees to undertake. Coordination of the project was handled at the local level.
