[ARCHIVED] Two pronounced deceased in separate overnight accidents

Two fatal accidents occurred approximately three hours apart on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Midland Police and Fire Departments responded to the first accident, which killed one driver and sent an Upton County Sheriff's deputy to the hospital, at approximately 11:11 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19 on the Loop 250 overpass at Big Spring Street.

The investigation into the two-vehicle accident revealed that a Nissan Altima had been traveling eastsbound on Loop 250 at a high rate of speed when it drifted into the center media and back onto the roadway. The driver of the Nissan over corrected and again entered the median, striking a light pole and continuing into the westbound lanes of Loop 250. The Nissan collided head-on with a westbound Upton County Sheriff's unit, causing both vehicles to roll and the Nissan to catch on fire.

The driver of the Nissan, who remains unidentified at this time, was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the Upton County Sheriff's deputy was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Midland Police and Fire Departments responded to the second fatal overnight accident at approximately 2:18 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20 in the 1400 block of East Wadley Avenue.

First responders arrived on scene to find that a Chevy Cruz had caught fire after striking a parked semi trailer. After extinguishing the fire, officers pulled Alfredo Trujillo, 22, of Midland, from the vehicle. He was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Trujillo, who was not wearing a seatbelt, is believed to have been driving westbound on Wadley Avenue when his vehicle left the roadway and struck the trailer.

The investigation showed that Trujillo had just fled the scene of another accident, in which he was traveling eastbound on Wadley Avenue, passing Fairgrounds and driving through the fence of Alldredge Gardens. Trujillo also hit a parked vehicle and a tree while on the property before fleeing westbound on Wadley Avenue and striking the parked semi trailer.
