[ARCHIVED] UPDATED: Man arrested for murder in connection with April 30 stabbing

Midland Police Department officers have arrested a man for murder after he and an accomplice were stabbed by a woman they attempted to rob last week.

Tevionn Coffield, 18, arrived at Midland Memorial Hospital by private vehicle after 12:30 a.m. on April 30 with two stab wounds to his chest. He also arrived with 18-year-old Qualen Blake, who was pronounced deceased at the hospital from a stab wound to the back.

A call regarding the stabbing came first from individuals driving Blake and Coffield to the hospital, who stated the stabbing occurred in the 400 block of South Webster Street after a confrontation between several men. Almost instantaneously, the vehicle was pulled over for a traffic stop by an MPD officer. The officer noted the men's injuries and escorted the vehicle to the hospital.

More than a half hour after the original call, a 20-year-old female was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after an employee of her apartment complex, located at 2300 South Camp Drive, called first responders regarding her injuries. She told police that she had been robbed by two men who matched Blake and Coffield's description, and that she had stabbed the men and received her injuries in the altercation.

Police responded to the originally reported Webster address and found no evidence of a stabbing. After further investigation, police found that all of the injured subjects were connected to the incident at the woman's apartment.

The investigation found that Blake and Coffield had planned to rob the female tenant and were transported to the apartment in a vehicle with two females and a juvenile. Blake, who was armed with a pistol, and Coffield entered the apartment, demanding money and drugs from the woman. One of the suspects threatened to harm a 4-year-old child sleeping in another room of the apartment, and, in fear for the child's safety, the tenant acquired a knife from the kitchen sink and stabbed both suspects. Blake and Coffield fled the apartment into the vehicle with their accomplices, and fabricated a story to tell police en route to the hospital

Police served a warrant for murder to Coffield upon his release from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Based on Section 19.02(b)(3) of the Texas Penal Code, an individual commits murder by participating in the commission of another felony, which in this case was robbery, that caused the death of another person. Coffield's bond has been set at $1 million.

Blake’s body has been sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy. Next of kin has been notified and the entire case will be handed to the District Attorney's office with additional charges pending a grand jury decision. Child Protective Services is also involved in the investigation.
