[ARCHIVED] Midland Police Department Warning Residents of Scams

The Midland Police Department is warning residents about two scams currently circulating online and via telephone in the Midland area.

MPD has been notified of residents receiving calls from an individual claiming to be an employee of the Internal Revenue Service. The caller tells potential victims they owe money from unpaid taxes to the government and threatens an arrest if the amount is not paid within 24 hours.

Another separate scam appears to target individuals seeking employment through Craigslist. The job post requests help for a front desk receptionist and after applying, the applicant receives an email stating the position has been filled but a personal assistant position is still available. The email then states upon accepting the position, the employer will send the applicant a check for an orphanage they have partnered with overseas. The applicant is advised to cash the check, deduct their earnings, and send the remaining cash to an overseas address.

MPD would like to remind the public to use caution before sending money to an unknown individual. Citizens who believe they have been a victim of either scam are encouraged to call MPD at 432-685-7108.
