The Scharbauer Sports Complex continues to grow with the recent completion of four new turf playing fields for Midland athletes.
City of Midland officials will hold a ribbon cutting for the new multi-purpose fields at the Scharbauer Sports Complex at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5. The fields feature artificial turf and can be used for football, soccer and lacrosse games. A restroom and concessions building was also built to support tournaments at the sports complex fields.
Each field is outlined in a different, vibrant color, making it easy for players and attendees alike to find their field during a tournament.
“These new fields will help with the amount of wear and tear on our existing fields, while providing a great option for games and tournaments,” said Parks and Recreation Manager Laurie Williams. “We are excited to expand our offerings to be able to hold more tournaments here in Midland. A facility with four full-sized turf fields in one location is unique to West Texas.”
The four auxiliary athletic fields are located on the east and south ends of the Scharbauer Sports Complex, which allowed Type B sales and use tax funds to be used for the project instead of the City’s general fund. The Type B sales tax is funded by a quarter, or 25 cents, of every $100 spent in Midland.
The $4.5 million project was designed by Luck Design Team, Inc. and constructed by low bidder Mid-Tex of Midland with turf installation by FieldTurf.
Fields will be available for rental by contacting the Midland Parks and Recreation Division.
