The City of Midland will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for its latest road project on Tuesday, May 9.

Officials will celebrate the completion of the Briarwood Avenue roadway improvement project at the Pioneer Resources Education Room at Bush Tennis Center, 5700 Briarwood Avenue at 2 p.m. The project focused on drainage and paving improvements, including the widening of Briarwood Avenue to four lanes between Avalon Drive and Holiday Hill Road. The project is the first of three phases of improvements to Briarwood Avenue that will ultimately extend three total miles from Holiday Hill Road to Highway 158.

“This is one of several road projects we are completing this year that greatly improve the overall driving experience for members of our community, especially as we continue to grow and develop toward the north and west,” said Engineering Services Director Jose Ortiz. "Most importantly, this road will make many residents’ daily commutes safer."

Jones Brothers Dirt and Paving Contractors was selected for construction of the $8.6 million project, and Parkhill, Smith and Cooper assisted City of Midland engineers with design. Midland Development Corporation, the City’s economic development arm that is funded by the Type A sales tax, contributed $4.7 million toward the cost of the project’s first phase.
