[ARCHIVED] 2013 Crime Rates

The Midland Police Department has compiled its annual crime statistics for 2013. The following numbers refer to Part I crimes, which are those most likely to be reported and are serious in nature and/or volume:

Crime 2012 2013 Increase/Decrease
Murder & Manslaughter by Negligence 4 5 25%
Forcible Rape 23 22 -4.35%
Robbery 52 63 21%
Aggravated Assault 321 260 -19%
Burglary 559 568 1.60%
Theft 2,313 2,459 6%
Auto Theft 136 164 21%
Total Part I 3,408 3,541 3.90%

Midland’s crime rate has fallen in eight of the last ten years, including 2012. The number of reported Part I crimes reached 4,547 in 2003 and has decreased each year since with the exception of 2009 and 2013.

Aggravated assaults showed the largest decrease of all Part I offenses between 2012 and 2013. Despite a slight increase in burglaries, the department has seen an overall decrease of 38 percent in the crime category since implementing a reduction strategy in June 2009, a year in which there were a total of 909 reported burglaries. The department continues to battle auto theft by educating citizens to lock their car doors at all times and take their keys with them when they leave their vehicles.

Despite a slight growth in these crime categories, the police department has been able to keep crime rates relatively low in a time of exponential growth thanks to its partnership with community organizations and dedicated officers and detectives. MPD also uses crime data and statistics to identify possible crime trends or spikes in crimes in a specific part of the city.
